This is a photo of light pollution over LA taken from the San Gabriel Mountains just north of Pasadena. In this photo the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius can be seen. In the mid 1980's I often travelled to the west coast for my job, allowing me opportunities to get astrophotos from this area. This photo was taken on 10 August 1985 on 100 speed Kodak film (lens was 28mm F2.8, 90 sec exposure). I was absolutely amazed at the magnitude of the light pollution in this area! Straight overhead (from the mountains) the viewing was not too bad. But anywhere close to the LA direction things were horrible. Note the layer of "garbage" seemingly crusted over the city... people not only have to observe through this junk, they have to breathe it!
